Wasn’t the Winchester 1894 used by the Calvary? I guess I don’t own a surplus rifle.

Well if I were to use a military surplus rifle to hunt it probably would be one of the old German Mausers in 7×57 or 8×57 caliber. In any case I wouldn’t use the sub-calibers for hunting. By sub-caliber I mean anything .223/5.56 or smaller for hunting anything larger than coyote. Were I to have to use a military rifle to hunt big game it would be something in at least .308/7.62×51 NATO or .30-06 Springfield.

I’ve had great fun and reasonable success with my M1 carbine on groundhogs after I figured out that the ball ammo was passing right through and letting them duck back down their holes before they expired.

M1903 Springfield Armory .30-06. It was the first .30-06 I ever fired and the first I took a deer with and it has never failed me since. In the last 100 years, they have probably been used to take more deer and other medium or even larger sized game than any other "surplus" rifle. The M1917 ranks pretty high as it is also .30-06. In the past 20 years, the SKS rifles have been used to take plenty of game. Most were surplus, but Norinko did produce some new or convert older surplus for commercial sales into models like the "paratrooper" model. The paratrooper model is an example of a commercial only model for export.

The Mosin Nagant, Lee Enfield and Springfield 1903 are all excellent rifles and utilize excellent calibers for hunting.

I only hunt long distance with a rifle, other than that I use a bow. So, for me its the Russian 7.62×56 Re-stocked, with a 9-40×50 scope.
